Box pleat kilts

Bear Hollow Clothiers offers historically inspired box pleated kilts, proudly made by TKH Kilts and rooted in the traditions of early Highland dress. Constructed from 100% wool sourced from some of the most respected mills in the United Kingdom, these kilts draw inspiration from one of the earliest tailored kilt forms to emerge after the 1782 repeal of the 1746 Dress Act, which had banned the wearing of tartan. In the late 18th century, weaving was done on single width looms and tartan production was labor intensive, often limiting tailors to as little as four yards of cloth. The box pleat design allowed for efficient use of this material while preserving the clarity and visual identity of each tartan. Defined by outward facing pleats with narrower under pleats meeting at the center, and sewn flat across the back, the box pleat produces a clean, disciplined silhouette with structure and presence.

Each Bear Hollow kilt is made to order with careful attention to historical proportion, weight, and finish, designed to sit properly at the natural waist and wear with authority. Reinforced stitching, traditional fastening methods, and thoughtful construction ensure durability without sacrificing comfort. Suitable for historical interpretation, formal occasions, or everyday wear, a Bear Hollow box pleated kilt is an authentic expression of Highland heritage. It is a garment built not only to be worn, but to be understood and appreciated as part of a living tradition.
